Expertise: marine invertebrate ecology, shellfish biology, aquaculture and impacts of harmful algal species on shellfish and aquaculture
Dr. Sandra Shumway is a Research Professor of Marine Science at the University of Connecticut. She received her PhD and D.Sc. degrees from the University of Wales. She has authored over 160 peer-reviewed scientific publications, edited several books, and serves as the Editor of the Journal of Shellfish Research, Journal of Experimental Marine Biology and Ecology, Reviews in Fisheries Science and Aquaculture, and is the founding editor of Harmful Algae. A former Marshall Scholar, Dr. Shumway’s research interests include marine invertebrate physiology, shellfish biology and harmful algal blooms. She has received numerous awards including the Long Island University Trustees Award for Lifetime Scholarly Achievement, the David Newton Award for Excellence in Teaching, is an Honoured Life Member of the National Shellfisheries Association, an Aldo Leopold Leadership Fellow and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and the World Aquaculture Society. Her most recent research has focused on the impacts of harmful algae on shellfish and aquaculture, feeding selectivity and strategies in bivalve mollusks, and also the control of aquatic nuisance species in marine aquaculture operations.
