Job Description UConn CIRCA is seeking a per diem STUDENT TRANSLATION SPECIALIST.  This can be done virtually by students from any campus. UConn CIRCA is a multi-disciplinary, center of excellence that brings together experts in the natural sciences, engineering, economics, political science, finance, and law to provide practical solutions to problems arising as a result of a changing climate.  The Student Translation Specialist is responsible for translating written materials from English to Spanish and ensuring that the translated text conveys original meaning, format, and tone and proofreading completed work. This student will work under the supervision of the CIRCA’s Project Assistant to complete assigned translations of fact sheets, maps, closed captions of video recordings and various community engagement materials in a timely manner.  These services are temporary and project based.  This will vary with each project and could be from 2 to 10 hours per week. Some weeks will not have any hours.  The hourly wage ranges from $14.40-$16.35 per hour based upon experience.  This will span the Fall 21 and Spring 22 semesters with the possibility of extension throughout the Summer 22 and next year if the student is still registered and available.

Major Job Duties

  • Convert and format written materials from English to Spanish
  • Create new text in the target language that reproduces the content and style of the original.
  • Edit and proofread text to accurately reflect language
  • Receive and submit assignments electronically
  • Use dictionaries and glossaries for reference. Attach cited references to translated documents.
  • Translate climate resilience and adaptation terminology. Build an electronic depository of terms in the target language
  • Translate informational fact sheets from English to the Spanish
  • Assure cultural proficiency of translated materials
  • Maintain a record of work completed, follow work protocol set by the project director
  • Communicate effectively with project manager, assistant and team members.
  • Save copies of all translations in various formats
  • Work with translation software
  • Attend meetings either virtually or in person, as allowed
  • Keep shared work folders in Q drive updated
Job Requirements
  • Must possess expert-level language skills in both English and Spanish with the ability to speak, write, and read fluently
  • Must have knowledge of climate and environmental science terms in English and facilitate translations of terms and general text to target language
  • Ability to translate written material in a culturally and linguistically appropriate manner.
  • Be able to work with MS Word, PowerPoint, utilizing other translation tools as needed
  • Be a team player and work collaboratively with other members of the team, project director, expert reviewer, and other entities
  • Computer skills are required as translated materials must be saved in several formats and organized in shared drive folders
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills (verbal and written)
